I Was in a Car Accident but Feel Fine. Should I Still See a Chiropractor?
One of the most common things I hear after a car accident is:
“I feel fine after the car accident; I think I’m okay.”
Sometimes that’s true.
Sometimes it isn’t.
Just because you don’t have pain immediately after a collision doesn’t necessarily mean you escaped injury. In many cases, inflammation takes time to develop. Symptoms may not appear for 24 to 72 hours after the accident.
That delay is one of the biggest reasons I encourage people to be evaluated after a crash even when they feel relatively normal.
Why Doesn’t Pain Show Up Right Away?
Your body is designed to protect you during stressful situations.
Immediately after an accident, adrenaline and other stress hormones can temporarily mask pain. At the same time, inflammation inside injured muscles and ligaments may take a day or two to build.
As those protective effects wear off, you may begin noticing:
Headaches
Shoulder pain
Upper back pain
Brain fog
Dizziness
Tingling or numbness in the arms or hands
Many people are surprised when they wake up the next morning feeling sore after thinking they had walked away unharmed.
What Does an Evaluation Tell You?
Getting evaluated doesn’t mean something is seriously wrong.
Often, an examination simply confirms that you’re doing well and can return to your normal activities with confidence.
Identifying an injury early gives you the best opportunity to recover. You get to it before the problem becomes more painful or harder to treat.
A thorough evaluation helps determine:
What tissues may have been injured
Whether X-rays or additional imaging are appropriate
If another healthcare provider should be involved
The best treatment plan for your specific injuries
Every accident is different, and so is every patient.
Dr. Johnson Says
One thing I tell patients is this:
“I’d much rather examine someone and tell them they’re doing great than have them wait two weeks and wish they had come in sooner.”
Whether your evaluation is with a chiropractor, your primary care provider, an urgent care clinic, or another qualified healthcare professional, the important thing is getting checked.
“I feel fine after the car accident” can turn into pain weeks later that was not documented. Exams can catch small problems before they become big problems.
Don’t Wait for Pain to Make the Decision
Pain is only one sign of injury.
I’ve seen people who felt fine immediately after an accident. Others have developed headaches, neck pain, or dizziness several days later. Early evaluation can provide peace of mind. It will identify hidden injuries if they are present. Or, help you make informed decisions about your recovery.
