A discussion on back posture

back spine
Have you have heard the phrase: “nice straight back” before and wondered what it means? The notion that a straight back is ideal is actually a common misconception! In fact, your spine is intended to have 4 distinct curves in it that run from front to back. When viewed from the side, the spine has an S curve that is intentional! The curves in our spine allow it to absorb energy like a spring. These curves also function to keep our body weight aligned over both feet!

Have you heard a chiropractor say that they will “straighten you out”? In reality, chiropractors use specific adjustments to realign and restore motion to the joints in your spine. They also use special massage techniques to relax tight muscles in your spine. The end result is a spine that curves smoothly, moves freely, and feels GREAT!

With that said, not all spinal curves are ideal. Some people suffer from SCOLIOSIS, which is when the spine has abnormal curves from side to side. This is a very common condition and is usually nothing to worry about if it is mild! In cases of severe scoliosis, x-ray imaging can be used to evaluate and guide the management of the condition. While adjustments cannot eliminate scoliosis, chiropractic care is very effective in managing the symptoms associated with the condition.

So now you know! Stop worrying about your spine not being straight as an arrow. Instead, LOVE your spine for all its curves and everything it allows you to do!
